The Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival, one of the state’s most popular events, will celebrate its 25th anniversary October 10-11, 2003, in historic Selma, Alabama.

There will be Friday and Saturday performances beginning at 7 p.m. in Selma’s Pickard Auditorium on Washington Street.  People are encouraged to come early for the Swappin’ Ground, which precedes the main events.  Swappin’ Ground is a favorite of all ages and offers everyone the opportunity to share a tall tale in an informal setting.  It starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Founded in 1978 by renowned storyteller Kathryn Windham, the Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival has become a favorite destination for all who treasure the irresistible combination of a tantalizing tale told by a master storyteller. Alabama’s Festival has steadily grown to prominence and is now one of the country’s top Tale Tellin’ events, attracting first-rate and internationally recognized storytellers.

As in years past, Kathryn Windham will serve as featured storyteller and emcee. She will be joined this year by David Holt, described by Vogue Magazine as “The best minstrel-storyteller.” Holt, a Grammy award winner who plays ten acoustic instruments, has performed his mountain music and told his stories all across this country and Europe, as well as in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Len Cabral will also grace this year’s Alabama Tale Tellin’ stage with his African and Caribbean stories through mime, poetry, song, humor, and vivid characterizations. Cabral is also an author. His book, Len Cabral’s Storytelling Book, offers a comprehensive teaching guide to storytelling.

Rounding out the trio of guest storytellers will be Connie Regan-Blake, who is credited with shaping and igniting the American storytelling revival. She was featured at the first Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival 25 years ago, and Alabama audiences look forward to her return to Selma with her engaging repertoire of Appalachian Mountain tale and true-life adventures.

The Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival coincides with Selma’s Annual Riverfront Market Day (Saturday, October 11th), so the second weekend in October is and event-packed time to visit one of Alabama’s most beautiful and historic cities….Selma, Alabama.
